This article explores a contrast between two differing approaches to spiritual and moral issues in schools. 'Moralists' such as Thomas Arnold (and his contemporary admirers) seek to transmit an authoritative tradition of belief and moral virtue. In contrast, 'professionals' take Socrates as their role model in these matters, and seek to promote in students critical and imaginative thinking, and a search for truth. It is argued that the second approach is the only one which does justice to our modern understanding of the limits of authoritative claims to moral truth. Recent policy statements concerning spiritual and moral values in schools are criticised from this perspective. |
