All available indicators suggest that the Indonesian economy had a good year in 1994. Although there was some anxiety about the continuing problems of the banking industry-highlighted by the Bapindo scandal (Fane 1994; Pangestu and Aris 1994)-and about the slowdown in the growth of non-oil/gas exports and the eruption of labour unrest (Pangestu and Azis 1994), an air of optimism had returned by year-end. This was reflected in a surge in private investment in the second half of the year, high consumer confidence UP, 19 December 1994), and indications of continued strong growth in economic activity. |
