This paper provides an introduction to some of the key issues relating to the context of sustainability. It argues for a more holistic approach to sustainability built around a consensus of an agreed definition and a philosophical framework to allow a meaningful discussion to take place, leading to improved decision making. It recognizes that at this emerging stage of the topic, even these matters are research issues and that in parallel with this debate it is important that progress at the subproblem level must continue. The paper points out the issues as a means of providing context for many of the papers in these proceedings. Cet article presente quelques-unes des grandes questions se rapportant a la durabilite. L'auteur milite en faveur d'une approche de la durabilite de nature plus holistique, elaboree autour d'un consensus sur une definition et un cadre philosophique permettant une discussion significative et a un processus decisionnel ameliore. L'auteur admet qu'a ce stade precoce du debat, et bien que ces questions fassent l'objet de recherches, qu'il est important, en parallele avec ce debat, que les progres se poursuivent au niveau des problemes secondaires. Cet article met en lumiere les questions qui peuvent constituer le sujet de nombreuses communications de cette conference. |
