Buildings have existed only for the last 20 000 years, while wood decay fungi originated about 300 million years ago. Thus it is likely, argue the authors, that the dry rot fungus which damages timber in buildings today, originally evolved in the wild to use wood as its nutrient source. The paper describes how the wild fungus was discovered in the Himalayas and proposes its possible route of domestic spread to buildings in Europe. It is hoped to develop chemical-free environmental strategies for its control. |
