As a positive policy to utilise local resources, the National Buildings Organisation of India has promoted research into and the construction of demonstration buildings up to five-storeys in Ioadbearing brickwork with walls only one-brick thick (23 cm). Special reinforcement detailing and specification of mortars and brick crushing strengths have also made such structures suitable for seismic regions (see Fig 1). The rationale behind this policy for a developing country and some of the technical aspects involved are discussed here. Mr. Mathur, who is director of the NBO, India, is a Vice-President of CIB. |
