This paper from the Princes Risborough Laboratory of BRE in the UK describes the bow which occurred when a selection of mainly timber-based doors were exposed externally to the prevailing weather, and internally to a simulated domestic climate. The data are compared with results of laboratory tests on the doors to evaluate bow. Laboratory tests gave a useful prediction of the range of bow which conventional doors achieved under natural exposure. But the existing tests underestimate bow in doors which respond only slowly to long term changes in conditions, as well as in doors which have a substantial thermal movement. Modifications are proposed to the test method to improve its accuracy in predicting which doors will be most stable, though doors which are not subject to continuous high internal temperatures in service will bow less than in a laboratory test. |
