In this ongoing project by the South African NBRI at Pretoria conventional building forms and materials are featured to emphasise the practicality of energy-saving. Preliminary results have shown savings of up to 70 per cent where there is intermittent space heating by electric radiant room heaters, highlighting the importance of proper thermal performance design and detailing. The low-energy house also had an acceptable winter environment even without room heating. But there were basic problems with the solar air heating system used. |
