The collagenolytic activity of avian medullary and cortical bone was measured by a sensitive technique employing a synthetic peptide as substrate. In all the groups considered medullary activity was greater than cortical activity. Birds which were calcifying an egg demonstrated significantly higher values of collagenolytic activity in both bone fractions as compared with non-laying birds. Oestrogen and androgen administration significantly depressed activity. The response to PTE injection was an extremely rapid elevation in the level of activity followed by a period of 1 to 2 h during which the level was depressed. |
