Normal, scaleless, and artificially depilated chicks were exposed for 30 min to an ambient temperature of 11° C when 3 to 14 d old and their cloacal temperatures recorded every 15 min. The three groups of chicks demonstrated a greater resistance to cooling as a function of increased age, but both depilated and scaleless chicks develop this ability at a significantly slower rate than normal birds. Scaleless chicks are no more resistant to acute cold stress as they mature than comparable chicks without their normal body insulation. |
