Following from the work of Harrison [(2000) Gay affirmative therapy: a critical analysis of the literature, British Journal of Guidance & Counselling, 28(1) , 37-53], this paper examines the implications of gay affirmative therapy from a personal construct perspective (PCP). It is argued that the construction of self can only be impoverished when derived from a role manufactured external to the individual, however enlightened or liberal that role may appear. PCP advocates that therapeutic affirmation must be at the level of possibility if we are to avoid prescription and disenfranchising those we seek to assist. |
