Age-standardised scores are a widely-used method of reporting assessment results in a way that largely removes the effect of age on performance, and that presents scores on a fixed scale which can be easily understood and interpreted. Recent criticisms of age-standardised scores are examined in this article, and found to consist either of points which are already well-known and appreciated by test developers or which are invalid. Although there are issues which need to be explored carefully in this area, it seems clear that the use of age-standardised scores is worthwhile, and that no other form of presentation is likely to replace them. |
