Diurnal rhythms of rat and mouse liver are reviewed. In particular, the following functions are discussed: amino acid catabolism (tyrosine aminotransferase, phenyla-lanine hydroxylase, tryptophan oxygenase, aspartate aminotransferase, etc.), glu-coneogenesis (phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase), glycogen metabolism, lipid metabolism, drug metabolism, several further enzymes belonging to various biochemical pathways, glutathione content, catecholamine content, nucleic acid content and synthesis, mitosis, membrane permeability, ultrastructural changes, and protein synthesis. Functional relationships and the physiological significance of the rhythmic organization has been emphasized as far as possible.
