Regular oscillations in global radiation records produced by wave clouds were noted on over a third of the days at College Park, Maryland. Power spectrum analysis indicated that pronounced cycles from about 10 min. up to 1 1/4 hrs are present on these days. They rise notably above the spectra of white, red, or flicker noise and undoubtedly reflect a real phenomenon. They occur on sunny as well as cloudy days. Fourier series offer remarkable fits to the data further attesting to their cyclical nature. In many cases microbarographic oscillations occur simultaneously with the wave clouds. A strong association is found with wind direction at the 850 millibar level which suggests that these wave clouds are induced by the mountains upwind in westerly directions from the station. Because of the migratory character of the cloud systems they do not fit the classical theoretical model of lee waves. Speculatively they might induce photoresponses in plants. |
