Mcrotus montanus chronically infected with Trypanosoma gambiense show changes in locomotor activity rhythms. In addition, large numbers of trypanosomes have been detected in the brain of Microtus. It is suggested that the altered activity rhythms, which are presumably caused by the presence of the trypanosomes, denote true neurological disturbances. The possible value of this model system in studies on locomotor rhythms and African trypanosomiasis is discussed. |
