Inhoud: In meat producing farm animals fertility is one of the most important traits. They should breed again after delivery as soon as possible for economic reasons. In sheep difficulties can be seen due to the seasonal dependency of sexual activity. Their sexual behaviour is, however, influenced by geographical location and breed. In the Institut fur Tierzucht un Tierverhalten, Mariensee, 30 km north of Hannover, seven groups of ewes of different genetic origin were surveyed for estrus appearance through a one year cycle. The animals were not mated to a ram in order to avoid an interruption of the new estrus cycle by pregnancy. Breed differences were apparent in the duration of unestrus during summer time. It was shortest in the Finnish landrace and Merino x Mountain breed crosses and longest in a small local native breed from the heather region. All other groups (German Blackface, Texel and crosses of these two with Finnish Landrace) were intermediate. The number of estrus cycles per ewe and year varied between 4.4 (heather sheep) and 14.4 (Finnish landrace).
