Inhoud: Periodic and rhythmic behavioural phenomena manifested in shell movements were investigated in mussels by registering the activity of the adductor muscles. Both active and rest periods are extremely variable in length, although rest states are more balanced referring to the preponderance of endogenous factors in the regulation. No definite correlations were found between the durations of the consecutive active and rest periods. The frequency of the fast rhythmic contractions is also variable and appears to play no determining role in the establishment of activity or rest. Within the active periods the distribution of the fast contractions is inhomogeneous in general, however, definite transient phases and sometimes special patterns could be revealed. The control of the described periodic phenomena is of ganglionic origin and a simple explanatory scheme including internal and external factors is proposed. The control of rhythmic patterns may be explained by the activity of independent or partially coupled oscillators located in different neurone populations of the same or of different ganglia.
