Contents: The influence of heterotrophic bacteria (HB) on the durability of reinforced concrete has been studied. Three grades of concrete viz. M10, M15 and M20 were used in the study. The potential-time behaviour of steel embedded in the concrete indicated that ennoblement occurred, due to bacterial action. A polarisation study and XRD observations also indicated that there may be enhancement of passivation due to the production of organic complexes by bacterial metabolism. In addition, it was noted that the HB adversely affected the compressive strength of concrete.
