The effects of pH on the in vivo toxicity of long chain primary, secondary and tertiary amines to the marine diatom, Amphora coeffeaeformis and nauplii larvae of Artemia salina were determined. Varying the pH of the test media indicated that the unionised species of alkyl amine was the major toxic species in sea water systems. Raising the pH increased the toxicity of primary, secondary and dimethyl tertiary amines to A. salina and had a marked, but lower effect on toxicity to A coffeaeformis. Possible reasons for some of the relationships are discussed. |
