Several microbial media were screened for their ability to maintain in vitro vegetative forms of Pasteuria penetrans. No replication was ever observed in these media and lysis of the inoculated bacteria rapidly occurred. Two semi-defined media were formulated. Medium 1 maintained inoculated ball-mycelia of P. penetrans in an apparently viable state for up to a month, resulting in very low yields of mature spores. Medium 2 permitted a small increase (less than fourfold) in the number of inoculated ball-mycelia but lysis, not sporulation, resulted. Similar results were obtained with cell-free extracts of two organisms: a fungus and a thermoactinomycete, respectively. Cell-free extracts from other organisms were screened but without success. |
