In 1954 Broadbent reported the results of an apparently simple experiment involving the presentation of a limited number of synchronized pairs of numbers, one to each ear. When a complete list had been presented, the subject was asked to say the numbers he had just heard (method of complete verbal report). This deceptively straightforward experiment has not only been replicated many times and generated a large amount of subsequent research, it has given rise to technical, methodological, and theoretical problems in the area of attention research which illustrate very clearly the way in which increases in knowledge about a phenomenon are inextricably a function of technical and methodological advances, as well as theoretical advances. |
