Title: "We are neutral therapists": Psychology, the state and social control
Author: Brown, Mark
Appeared in: Australian psychologist
Paging: Volume 37 (2002) nr. 3 pages 165-171
Year: 2002-11
Contents: This article discusses the engagement of psychology in the political domain of punishment. Three aspects of contemporary cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) intervention are considered. It is concluded that the State's instrumental demands for psychology to utilise behavioural control techniques upon offenders has lead the discipline and its practitioners on a course that is worthy of much greater scrutiny than it currently receives.
