This comment attempts to show that research methodology is not a complete model for the clinical domain. The writings of Shapiro serve as a good object lesson. Because Shapiro is often identified with the development of single case methodology, It is sometimes assumed that his clinical approach is no more or less than an application of this methodology. On the face of it, therefore, Shapiro's writings seem to represent a convenient rationale for heavily quantitative and predictive approaches to clinical neuropsychology. It is not difficult to show, however, that Shapiro's clinical philosophy ranges beyond the dictates of single case methodology to include qualitative approaches to observation and an historical approach to diagnosis. |
