Computers are having an impact on a variety of areas in psychology. The use of computers in cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) has been limited. This paper reviews the application of computers to CBT, presents some current uses and suggestions for future application, particularly in the areas of self-monitoring (behavioural assessment) and self-management (homework). Issues concerning the barriers to the use of computers in CBT are addressed, including acceptability to clients, acceptability to therapists, validity issues, and cost. Finally, an example of application of computers to CBT for the management of chronic pain is described. |
