Voluntary migration involves making a complex decision and carrying out an often difficult adjustment process. People frequently undertake these tasks with minimal information and little insight into the psychological factors involved. This is partly due to the fact that the media as well as scholarly and lay discussions assume that the phenomenon can satisfactorily be understood in terms of an “external” model emphasising economic, political, and social factors, but neglecting psychological elements such as personality, object relations, and motivation. The “internal” model presented here takes account of these and is supported by empirical observations in the form of questionnaires and in-depth interviews. This approach yields insights and practical guidelines for counselling both would-be migrants in the homeland and also actual migrants experiencing adjustment problems after arriving in their new country of residence. |
