Inhoud: The major purpose of this study was to delineate a profile of the person who attends a psychiatrist in private practice. Twenty psychiatrists in private practice in metropolitan Melbourne were randomly selected for interview concerning their patients. It was found that in the selected sample the profile of patients defined as undergoing psychotherapy differed from those receiving “general psychiatry”: they were younger and stayed more closely within a certain age range than general patients, they were mostly from higher social classes as defined by occupation, and they saw their doctors more frequently, from once to five times per week. There were not substantially more women than men attending private psychiatrists, whether for psychotherapy or for general psychiatry, and the reasons for peoples' attendance did not show very marked differences on the basis of sex. Most people, of whatever sex and whatever treatment condition saw their psychiatrists for about 21 months, although psychotherapy patients had many more visits within that time.
