  Career interests and ethnic backgrounds

Titel: Career interests and ethnic backgrounds
Auteur: Athanasou, James A.
Verschenen in: Australian psychologist
Paginering: Jaargang 20 (1985) nr. 2 pagina's 153-161
Jaar: 1985-07-01
Inhoud: Super and Crites (1962) have hypothesized that certain kinds of social environments encourage the development and expression of particular interests, while inhibiting the development or manifestation of others. This study tested the hypothesis that cultural factors exert a direct influence on measured vocational interests. Subjects (606 men and 524 women), with a median age of 15.4 years were selected from 2708 career guidance applicants throughout the state. Subjects who were born in Australia and spoke only English were matched in terms of age, sex and locality with those who were either born overseas or spoke English as a second language. These subjects from 67 different ethnic backgrounds were administered the Kuder Preference Record. Scores of the ethnic groups across the 10 Kuder interests were compared to “Australian” subjects — males and females separately — in an ex post facto design. Scores of the 10 largest ethnic groups were examined separately using the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed ranks test, but there were no consistent patterns in the differences. Although there were some significant differences in scores for seven out of the 10 groups, the study showed few overall significant differences in the career interests of those from ethnic backgrounds. Where significant differences did exist they were not always constant across groups.
