Inhoud: The objectives of this paper are to outline briefly the basic concepts of behavioural toxicology and to suggest roles which behavioural toxicologists can play as Australia faces up to its own problems of environmental management. Environmental management always involves trade-offs between biological limitations on the one hand and social cost-benefits on the other. Knowledge about the capability of human and other living organisms to cope behaviourally with potentially toxic conditions of their physical environments can add essential information useful to decision makers and legislators concerned with such matters. It is contended that, in terms both of public concern and sophistication in the study of interactions between chemical compounds in the physical environment and behaviour, the time is right for the emergence of a new discipline within psychology.
