Interest in the developing discipline of neuropsychology has increased to a point where needs for experts in both its research and clinical aspects are recognised, the roles of neuropsychologists are matters for discussion in several parts of the world and concerns are being expressed about standards for membership of the discipline and for its responsibilities to society generally. The present paper is an attempt to put these and related matters into perspective for the 1980's. As they are developing, roles for neuropsychologists cover the broad range from the generation of new knowledge and skills through basic and applied research to the use of knowledge and skills in the clinical setting. Although the latter now tends to emphasize diagnosis, there are opportunities for further extension into patient management, rehabilitation and the monitoring of trends in patient illness and recovery. There are a few examples of the role neuropsychologists may play as “expert witnesses” in cases involving determinations of legal responsibility for neurobehavioural deficits. Four models for the education and training fof neuropsychologists are examined, together with the likely demand for their products. |
