The paper analyzes the age distribution, academic qualifications, teaching interests, and research specializations of psychologists holding appointments in Australian universities. Psychology Departments will face many problems over (he next 20 years following the abrupt end to expansion within the university system after two decades of rapid growth. In particular, the marked shift that will occur in the age distribution of psychologists in Australian universities will affect the career paths of recent and future graduates, and may limit innovation as well as lead to problems of obsolescence. Consideration is given to organizational changes that might prevent some of the problems that seem certain to result from the recent transition from rapid growth to steady state within universities. |
