Empirical research on Australian Aboriginal alcohol abuse is nearly nonexistent. In this study, 72 Aboriginal alcohol abusers were interviewed. The basic aim was to ascertain the effect of group identity in social fringe groups on drinking behavior. Aboriginal group identity was related to indices of alcohol abuse and alcoholic symptoms. In the rejected urban fringes of society, Aboriginal group identity represents the last link to a social network. This contention was supported by the relationship of Aboriginal group identity to social stress, lack of acceptance, and white pressure. These results point to the defensive nature of excess drinking behavior as part of the culture of fringe groups. |
