Annual citation rates were established from Social Science Citation Index 1975-1977 for 271 Australian psychologists. Overall, the publications of 161 of those in the sample (predominantly at lecturer or senior lecturer level) attracted fewer than two citations per annum. In contrast, 20 people (mostly holding appointment at professor level) accounted for almost 60 percent of the total citations received by the sample. Several psychology departments in Australian universities outrank most British and North American departments in research publication per staff member per year. These Australian departments, however, have lower ranking in terms of research impact as measured by citation statistics. |
