Mechanisms to safeguard professionalism in psychology

Title: Mechanisms to safeguard professionalism in psychology
Author: Kirkby, Robert J.
Appeared in: Australian psychologist
Paging: Volume 14 (1979) nr. 2 pages 121-129
Year: 1979-07-01
Contents: The present paper suggested four possible mechanisms that could be implemented to upgrade and maintain professionalism in Australian psychology: the introduction of an association based on the “college” system; the restructuring of tertiary training programs; the establishment of stringent registration and re-registration processes; and the development of appropriate continuing education programs. It was argued that while these strategies could facilitate professionalism, they could, at the same time, potentially disadvantage the practice of psychology. Finally, it was suggested that these mechanisms could be activated most effectively within the framework of The Australian Psychological Society and that the membership of the Society provided the greatest potential influence for their implementation.
