Alternative models of training in clinical psychology are outlined and some of the issues involved in choosing amongst them are raised. It is argued that most Australian clinical psychology programmes fall into only two of the posited nine possible classes. This is seen as undesirable for several reasons: (1) The inherent lack of educational justification or experimentation; (2) the fact that many of those actually delivering clinical psychological services have only the lowest level of training, and have restricted opportunities to gain higher training; and (3) widespread dissatisfaction amongst practitioners with the adequacy of their training. Alternative courses based on different models are proposed. |
