Mowrer (1960), as part of a more general theory of behaviour, formulated a theory of word learning based on secondary reinforcement principles. He suggested that “talking” birds would be ideal subjects to test his notions. Two studies in the literature attempted to test his theory, but for different reasons were inadequate. The present experiment attempted a more rigorous test of the theory with the common galah. Results from experimental birds supported Mowrer's theory. |
