Inhoud: This report describes three experiments which investigated the efficacy of social reinforcement in controlling the working behaviour of mildly retarded workers in a rehabilitation centre. In the first experiment it was shown that social reinforcement from the supervisor did increase the time spent by subjects exhibiting “working behaviour” as defined by a predetermined criterion and measured by an observer during time samples. A control group which received no reinforcement did not show similar changes in observed working behaviour. In a second experiment, contingency of the reinforcer was demonstrated to be important; while subjects receiving noncontingent social reinforcement did work more than during baseline observations, contingent reinforcement increased the frequency of working behaviour to a greater extent. A third experiment investigated the durability of social reinforcement and it was found that working levels were still significantly higher than baseline levels at the end of 8 weeks of reinforcement.
