Dependence of wundt and hering illusions on properties of intersect angles

Titel: Dependence of wundt and hering illusions on properties of intersect angles

Jaar: 1978-12-01
Inhoud: In the Wundt and Hering illusions a straight line appears curved when it is viewed against a background of lines that differ systematically from each other in orientation. This distortion was found to be maximal when there is an increasing rate of change in the size of intersect angles from the end to the centre of the test line and when most of the intersect angles are between 10 and 30°. Such results are consistent with the claim that the Wundt and Hering illusions are complex forms of the simple illusion in which intersecting lines are displaced from each other in apparent orientation as a function of the size of the angle they form. In these terms a straight line in the Wundt and Hering illusions appears curved because there is cumulative change in its apparent spatial direction over successive points of intersection.
