Scaling perceived distance along a road

Title: Scaling perceived distance along a road
Author: Hoffmann, Errol R.
Macdonald, Wendy A.
Appeared in: Australian journal of psychology
Paging: Volume 30 (1978) nr. 1 pages 69-77
Year: 1978-04-01
Contents: The relationship between perceived and real distance along a road was investigated using the method of fractionation in a field experiment and two laboratory experiments. In each case data were well fitted by a modified form of Stevens' power law. A laboratory simulation (Experiment 2) failed to reproduce results of the field experiment However, when distance stimuli were improved by using ordinary cars instead of lights to define standard distances, laboratory results (Experiment 3) were closer to those obtained in the field.
