Asymmetrical transfer using a verbal learning paradigm

Titel: Asymmetrical transfer using a verbal learning paradigm
Auteur: Sweller, J.
Verschenen in: Australian journal of psychology
Paginering: Jaargang 28 (1976) nr. 2 pagina's 91-96
Jaar: 1976-08-01
Inhoud: Two groups of subjects were each given two related, paired-associate lists to learn. The first list given to one group consisted of CVC English words. The second list consisted of CVC nonsense syllables constructed by removing the last letter of each word and replacing it with the letter Q. In all other respects the lists were identical. The second group of subjects was given the same lists in reverse order—the nonsense syllables were used as the initial task. The results indicated firstly, that learning of the two tasks was more rapid if the English word task was given first; secondly, there was a greater degree of transfer from English words to nonsense syllables than from nonsense syllables to English words; thirdly, subjects who were required to learn the nonsense syllables first, tended not to be aware of the relation between the two tasks, while those who were required to learn the English words first were aware of the relation.
