Social constraint as a determinant of attitudes to freedom

Auteur: Gibbins, Keith
Verschenen in: Australian journal of psychology

Jaar: 1976-04-01
Inhoud: Discussions were carried out with students on the changes that had occurred in Western society in this century. It emerged that they believed that there had been an increase in bureaucratization with a resulting feeling of restriction; at the same time that there had been a growth in the value in which individual freedom was generally held. This suggested the hypothesis that, as people come to feel restricted in an organizational setting, their desire for freedom in quite other areas of living increases. This hypothesis is discussed in the context of Brehm's (1966) notion of psychological reactance. An experiment is reported in which subjects were given communications suggesting that their university was either a restrictive or a liberating place and that change was either likely or unlikely in this respect. Subsequent scores on a measure of the value of individual freedom were higher for those subjects who had been told that the university was restrictive.
