Adult male Wistar rats each received five drops of Saline solution from a dropper placed directly inside the mouth. They were then injected with Lithium Chloride to establish a conditioned taste aversion (first-order pairing). Two days later the animals received five drops of a Sucrose solution followed immediately by five drops of the Saline solution (second-order pairing). Control groups received either the first-order pairing or the second-order pairing but not both. Subsequent preference tests established that the experimental group had learned an aversion to the Sucrose solution as a result of its pairing with the Saline solution which had previously been associated with poisoning. These results demonstrate that higher-order conditioning of a taste aversion can be established following only one first-order and one second-order conditioning trial. |
