Conclusions as to whether set can increase the amount of information transmitted in tachistoscopic studies have been contradictory. It was suggested that one of the confounding variables in previous experiments has been the nature of the stimulus material. With “secondary” stimulus attributes no increase in information transmission has been shown because mediation tends to have been focussed in a low capacity “sematic” process. Use of “primary” stimulus attributes tends to have resulted in mediation being focussed in a “schematic” function having a capacity sufficiently great to allow increase in accuracy of some responses without a concomitant inhibition of others. Results supported the hypotheses and indicated that set can influence the amount of information transmitted. |
