The effects of manipulating position preferences on the subsequent learning of a visual discrimination were investigated in 2 experiments. In the first experiment the visual cues were absent during the position training; in the second the visual cues were present but irrelevent to reward during the position training. In neither experiment did the position training produce subsequent differences in rates of visual discrimination learning between the experimental and control groups. Subjects in both groups learned much more slowly in the second experiment than in the first. The implications of these results for theories of animal discrimination learning are discussed. |
