In two experiments judgments of kinesthetic horizontality were compared following two conditions of exposure to kinesthetic stimulation from a bar tilted at 20°. In the first conditon 5 received visual information transformed by a prism system such that at a physical tilt of 20° the bar appeared horizontal. In the second condition S received false information from a dial reading that the bar was horizontal when it was physically tilted at 20°. The two conditions were found to produce similar aftereffects in post-exposure judgments of kinesthetic horizontality. This was interpreted as showing that the behavioural compensation which arises when S performs some task utilising a transformed sensory channel is mediated by a learning process in which the kinesthetic inputs used to control motor-responses are reclassified in terms of visual information. |
