The predictive validity, when used with teacher trainees, of some pencil and paper personality scales, relating broadly to social adjustment, was examined against the criteria of (a) tutor and peer opinion, and (b) “dropout” from college. On the first criterion, results were neither significant nor encouraging. On the second criterion the MMPI Pd scale predicted “drop-outs” with better than chance success; although the other six tests failed to screen students who would withdraw from the course, three (CPS 2, MPS 4, and MMPI Si) showed some promise as predictive devices.
