Subjects (66 male and 43 female) were asked to volunteer for an unspecified psychology experiment and were allowed to choose under which of three conditions (three possible degrees of affiliation) they wished to participate. They were also required to express on a g-point scale their willingness to volunteer for an experiment. Birth order was found to have no significant effect on volunteering but, contrary to the findings of previous studies, there was a significant difference in the volunteering behaviour of the two sexes. |
