The parental relationships of male homosexuals: Some theoretical issues and a pilot study

Title: The parental relationships of male homosexuals: Some theoretical issues and a pilot study
Author: Nash, John
Hayes, Frank
Appeared in: Australian journal of psychology
Paging: Volume 17 (1965) nr. 1 pages 35-43
Year: 1965-04-01
Contents: It is suggested that early experiences (rather than biological factors) are important to the origins of homosexuality, and that in the case of males the relationship with the father is critical. Three categories of homosexuals are distinguished-“actives” “passives” and “active-passives” Homosexuality may be thought of with reference to a dominance hierarchy, and the position of the three groups on this scale is discussed. It is suggested that “passives” differ from actives in having a closer relationship with the mother, and some clinical evidence supporting this is produced from 118 Ss; “passives” also tended to have a worse relationship with the father than the “actives” There was an excess of boys in the families of these homosexuals, and some possible implications of this are discussed.
