Items which discriminate between Ss on the basis of specific background experiences are, as intelligence test items, undesirable. Yet items thus biased and unfair still appear in current tests: (a) subtly ambiguous items which are biased in favour of Ss who have learned to think in the same way as the item writer, and (b) items which, while not ambiguous, offer a variety of initially plausible modes of solution and are biased in favour of Ss whose past experiences lead them to the correct mode early on. In either case Ss could well wish for serendipity, a knack which would lead them directly to the appropriate mode of solution from among the multiple alternatives. Means of eliminating these biases are suggested. |
