This study is an attempt at critical evaluation of the Holland-Skinner teaching programme in Psychology. This programme consists of items of various kinds: (a) reports of experimental findings with pigeons and rats, (b) the teaching of a language system to co-ordinate these experimental results, and (c) extrapolations from these to problems of human behaviour. The most dubious part of the programme is (c). It consists of anecdotes and fantastic anecdotes. To such items, the student should not be merely giving 'right' responses, but asking critically “Is this so?” and “What is the evidence that this is the case?” Failure to give the student opportunity to respond in this way would seem gravely to limit the educational value of this programme, reducing it to an instrument of indoctrination rather than of education. |
