MATREXAM: A NEW FORM OF COMPUTER-GRADED EXAMINATION

Titel: MATREXAM: A NEW FORM OF COMPUTER-GRADED EXAMINATION
Auteur: Atkinson, George F.
Doadt, Edward
Verschenen in: Assessment and evaluation in higher education
Paginering: Jaargang 5 (1980) nr. 2 pagina's 112-121
Jaar: 1980-04
Inhoud: Some perceived difficulties with conventional multiple choice examination schemes are mentioned, and a modified form of examination is proposed. Test items identified in a continuous prose passage, or blanks left in it, are to be explained or supplied by selecting answers from a grid of up to one hundred alphabetically-arranged answers and distractors. The address in the grid of the selected answer is supplied to the computer, which has been programmed to award marks for one or more synonymous correct answers, and partial marks for partially-correct answers. Individual reports are generated for each student, a supervisor's report of all marks awarded, and a report of the distribution of answer choices for each test item. The latter is a useful diagnostic tool which may identify groups of extremely deviant answers pointing to a widespread gross misunderstanding in the class. Early trials of the system on tests also using conventional written answers show an encouraging correlation of scores. Possible applications extend to many academic subjects.
