A controlled experiment to quantify the consistency of a group of examination markers is described. The project was undertaken in the Electronic Engineering Department of Hong Kong Polytechnic. For a selected examination the papers were marked twice, once by the subject lecturer of each class, and once by a -standard” marker who re-marked through the totality of the papers. For the investigation two questions were chosen from the paper, one being of a descriptive nature and the other having a calculation form. From the resulting marks the class averages, standard deviations and correlation coefficients were computed. In view of the wide variations found in the marking, several proposals are presented for improvement of assessment reliability. |
